Return to Sports after ACL Surgery
What is it?
ACL surgery is when doctors fix a part of your knee called the anterior cruciate ligament, often known as the ACL. This ligament helps keep your knee stable, but it can get injured during sports or other activities. If the ACL tears, it might not heal by itself, so doctors may recommend surgery.
During the surgery, the doctor replaces the torn ACL with a new piece. This piece can come from your own body (like a part of your patellar tendon or hamstring) or from a donor. The surgery is done using small cuts and a tiny camera to guide the doctor.
After the surgery, you’ll need to do physical therapy and exercises to help your knee recover. Not everyone with an ACL injury needs surgery, as it depends on your age, how active you are, and the extent of the injury. Your doctor will help you decide the best treatment for you.
Right After Surgery
- Take it easy: Protect your knee and avoid putting too much weight on it.
- Use ice and keep it up: Ice packs and keeping your leg up can help with swelling.
Weeks 1-2: Start Moving
- Move your knee: Start with easy exercises to make your knee more flexible.
- Use your muscles: Do exercises to make the muscles around your knee stronger.
- Gradually start putting weight on your leg: Listen to your physical therapist about how much weight is okay.
Weeks 3-6: Get Stronger
- More exercises: Do harder exercises to make your leg muscles even stronger.
- Work on balance: Practice standing on one leg to improve your balance.
- Start cycling: Ride a bike to help with your fitness.
Weeks 6-12: Train for Your Activity
- Sporty exercises: Do exercises that are like the movements you do in your sport or activity.
- Practice agility: Work on moving quickly and changing direction.
- Begin running slowly: Start running bit by bit.
Months 3-6: Step It Up
- Get even stronger: Keep adding more weight to your exercises.
- Jumping exercises: Start doing exercises where you jump and land safely.
- Practice your sport's moves: Work on specific skills for your sport.
Months 6 and Beyond: Go Back to Your Sport
- Check if you're ready: Do tests to see if you're ready to go back to your sport.
- Gradually start playing again: Take it slow when going back to playing your sport.
- Keep checking in: Make sure to see your doctor or therapist regularly to make sure everything is going well.
What is our focus?
Post ACL surgery, our focus is on guiding and supporting patients through a comprehensive rehabilitation process. Our primary objectives include
- Optimizing Recovery: We aim to facilitate a smooth and effective recovery after ACL surgery, ensuring that patients regain strength, flexibility, and stability in the knee.
- Restoring Range of Motion: Through targeted exercises and hands-on therapy, we work to restore the normal range of motion in the knee joint, promoting flexibility and reducing stiffness.
- Strengthening Muscles: We design personalized exercise programs to strengthen the muscles around the knee, with a specific focus on the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles. This helps improve overall knee stability and function.
- Enhancing Proprioception and Balance: We incorporate exercises that enhance proprioception (awareness of body position) and balance, crucial for preventing future injuries and improving overall joint control.
- Gradual Weight-Bearing Progression: We guide patients in a step-by-step process of gradually increasing weight-bearing on the surgically repaired knee, ensuring a safe and progressive return to normal activities.
- Sport-Specific Training: For those looking to return to sports or specific activities, we tailor rehabilitation to include sport-specific exercises and drills, simulating movements and demands associated with the particular sport.
- Pain Management: We address any post-surgical pain or discomfort through appropriate modalities and techniques, ensuring that pain is managed effectively to support the rehabilitation process.
- Patient Education: We provide ongoing education to patients, helping them understand the importance of adherence to the rehabilitation program, home exercises, and the gradual reintroduction of activities.
- Monitoring Progress: Regular assessments allow us to monitor progress, make necessary adjustments to the rehabilitation plan, and ensure that patients are advancing toward their functional goals.

- Make Your Leg Muscles Stronger: We’ll give you exercises to make the muscles around your knee strong, like your thigh and calf muscles. This helps your knee be steady and work better.

Recently, I underwent ACL reconstruction surgery with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Manu Bora . Just a day after the surgery, I am feeling much better Dr. Manu Bora explained the entire process in detail before the surgery. His team was very professional and caring. I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Manu Bora and his team. Their expertise and dedication made my ACL surgery experience positive. I highly recommend him for orthopedic surgery.

Got my ACL surgery done by Dr. Manu Bora. One of the finest doctor I have ever met. Explains everything in details to the patients. Dr. Bora is never in a hurry and always addresses every minor doubts which I had. Also his team is very helpful be in case of pre surgery coordination or post surgery rehabilitation. Also special thanks to Pristyn Care which coordinated everything as I was traveling from a different state and they were helpful in every step.

Underwent MPFL reconstruction surgery performed by Dr. Manu Bora for chronic patellar dislocation. His exceptional skills and confidence, along with accurate diagnosis, gave me much reassurance. Out of all the other doctors I have seen, Dr. Manu Bora is the only one I could trust with my injury, and I decided to proceed with the surgery. The surgery, with minimal invasion, and recovery has been exactly as he described it would be. His physiotherapy team, especially Dr. Dhruvi Gandhi, guided me through post-operative rehabilitation and my recovery has been progressing really well. I can't thank him and his team enough for treating me in the best way possible. I am so grateful. Thank you so much Dr. Manu Bora.
